Everton 3–1 Coventry City. Premier League, Bramley Moore (Hill Dickinson Stadium), 6 November 2026. Behind in the 52nd minute, level in the 56th, ahead in the 61st. Everton have found a much more agreeable way to spend a Friday night than letting a bad seven minutes become a bad weekend.
Barry, twice
Yann Gboho put Coventry ahead after the interval. Thierno Barry supplied the answer: first from Vitalii Mykolenko’s cross, then from Tyrique George’s delivery five minutes later. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added the third in the 81st minute. The club’s report records Barry reaching ten goals for the season, with an assist to go alongside his double tonight.
Three wins in a row across league and cup is a run worth enjoying. Two of them came against Newcastle; this one required Everton to recover from a setback rather than defend an advantage. There is something particularly satisfying about an equaliser arriving before the grumbling has properly warmed up.
Three points, plenty of argument
Sam Blitz’s Sky Sports report concentrates on the decisions Coventry felt went against them: James Tarkowski’s alleged hair pull on Caleb Yirenkyi, a challenge on Taiwo Awoniyi judged to have taken place outside the penalty area, and the handball question around Barry’s second goal. Sky reports that VAR found no conclusive evidence to disallow that goal.
Those are part of the match, too. Coventry supporters have reasons to be unhappy, and pretending otherwise would be daft. Equally, Everton still had to turn a deficit into a win. We can enjoy the finishing without appointing ourselves the appeals committee. There will be more than enough people volunteering for that job.
A decent way to mark 592
This was David Moyes’s 592nd match in charge of Everton, equalling Harry Catterick’s club record, according to the official report. That is a substantial piece of Everton history. It also makes a pleasant change for a milestone evening to end with the football doing its bit.
The win took Everton fifth at full time, with the rest of the weekend still to come. No need to start booking anything. But after the early-season frustrations, three successive wins and a striker scoring regularly are allowed to feel good. We have had enough practice at the other feeling.
Next: Brentford away
The official fixture list confirms Brentford v Everton, Monday 23 November, 8pm GMT, Premier League, Gtech Community Stadium. There is an international break between now and then. For once, it interrupts something we would quite happily have kept going.
